John Whaite

New book

27 March, 2014thecuriouspast

Not quite sure how I am going to fit it on the shelf but my new John Whaite Bakes book has arrived. Looking forward to attempting Prune & Orange tartlets, Sherbet Lemon cake and Rolo meringue kisses. I will not be doing the marmite and cheddar loaf! You either love it or hate it and I’m in the latter category.

I love early evening when the lights go on. It’s just so warm and welcoming. Also loving the .5 option on the iPhone 12 plus max. Pixel was doing a fine job of looking like a cat lamp. Moved a painting from the landing to the kitchen. It’s of the Fountaine Inn, Linton, North Yorkshire. One of my favourite villages with many happy memories. Now I’ve added some yellow to the colour palette in the room it goes well. #interiordesign #interiorstyling #myhomestyle

Until I broke my elbow 9 years ago I had no idea of the classifications for radial head fractures. Well why would I. Radial head fractures are approx 33% of elbow breaks and are often the result of a fall on an outstretched hand or FOOSH. Which is exactly what I did whilst on holiday with a friend in Morecambe. It’s was 🤬🤬🤬 painful. However I did stay on holiday for the following 4 days as might as well be in pain on holiday instead of home alone. especially as @alisterfirthphotography and May were on their way to join me. Thanks to @gemdewhurst and @dewythetog79 who came to rescue me and my car. With good management for 3 weeks ie no work 😉 (would be my right elbow) And care after that no op was necessary and no after effects have been felt so far. Classifications are Mason 1, 11, 111, 1V. Mine was between a 11 and 111. A partial articulated fracture with displacement. The scare of needing an op if it displaced anymore made me behave. Would be lovely if it was my first and last fracture. 🤞 #memories #familyhistory #familyphotos
Pixel has been checking out the new working and art arrangement. Not had the paws up yet. She’s also not convinced about the new reading spot! #pixelmycat #mycatpixel #lazysaturday
On the move. I’ve loved having my desk in the kitchen but found it unproductive. With my talks and taking part in WEA art classes it’s is also not practical. The only downside I foresee is it’s a tad cold on the ground floor. But lucky to have an extra room. #officemove @russelloakandsteel desk #readingcorner #interiordesign
#genealogyphotoaday #handsome My lovely Granddad Moses, known for two thirds of his life as Frank. He is the Grandparent I was closest too. For two main reasons. He lived the longest dying when I was 13 and for 2 years he lived with us moving eventually to a residential home. Around 1961? It’s hazy. He had an operation to amputate both legs. After my Grandma died in 1963 he moved in to our front room but it wasn’t ideal as it was an old Victorian end terrace house. Finally and reluctantly he moved to a residential home. Physically tall, slim, wiry and strong. Personality was extremely kind, loving and patient. He took time to teach and play dominoes with me. I now have so many questions It never crossed my mind to ask. #familyphotography #familyhistory #familyarchive #grandparents #thecuriouspast #familystories
#genealogyphotoaday #old these are the oldest things in my family archive. A carved coconut shell on an imperial silver plate and brass base. And a bible that came into my Great Grandfathers possession in 1862. It’s believed the coconut shell was brought back when he returned from India. I can imagine how amazed he would have been with India. He was used to the coal mines of Kimberley Nottinghamshire. A family story is that he had a stab wound scar in his side. Some years ago I had the bible restored as it was falling apart. Now I think it was a mistake. It’s definitely been over restored 😞. The coconut shell and bible is now with the 4th generation and the bible will be 140 years old next year. The coconut shell maybe a few years younger. Moses returned from India in 1867 to find his wife had left for Australia. But that’s another story. #familyhistory #familyarchive #india #familyheirloom #heirloom
#genealogyphotoaday #document. My Grandma, Sarah Elizabeth Fearn, known as Lizzie. Well Grandma to me. It would have been her birthday today. As she died a few weeks after my 10th birthday I only have vague memories of her. But I remember a kind, loving and cheerful lady. I’m always shocked when I remember that my Grandma was born 134 years ago. She had her first and only child, my Mum, at 37. And my Mum had me, her first child when she was 28. #grandma #familyhistory #birthdaymemories
Pace was better for the first two miles then it got a tad muddy. Look forward to doing that walk a) when the weather gets better and b) when I actually know where I going. #dailywalk #lockdownexercise #staylocal #fitbitsense #mentalhealthmatters
First time out since the snow arrived and definitely a walk around the houses. Only one bit of greenery. The local cemetery. Had Yorkshire puddings with dinner oh and one for pudding with golden syrup. Brought back childhood memories. 3 for the freezer. #walk #dailywalk #exercise #mentalhealth #wellbeing #yorkshirepudding #glutenfreeyorkshirepudding
First print to see where else to cut away. A few adjustments needed and not sure yet how to do the colour blending on this one and may even start again. Its challenging working in reverse but very therapeutic whittling away at lino. More next week. #WEAcourse #linocut #art #birchtrees #artclasses
